Embracing the Chartered Marketer Journey

In her CM Snapshot, Stefany Singh realizes that adjusting goals doesn’t signify failure. She discusses her struggle to find suitable employment in Toronto and how she treated the rigorous DMSC CM program like she did her MBA to complete it. Stefany is embracing the Chartered Marketer journey and has gained a greater respect for the Chartered Marketers who came before her.

Marketing Excellence

I pursued the CM designation through Digital Marketing Skills Canada (DMSC) because I genuinely believe in lifelong learning and ensuring my marketing skills and knowledge are current. I seek out experiences that reflect my brand values, and the CM designation symbolizes marketing excellence, which I want my brand to reflect as well.

Education, Network, Community

Since being laid off in March of 2023, finding employment in the Toronto job market has been incredibly difficult. While I have been active with networking and volunteering, the silence from your submitted applications can be deafening. I learned about the DMSC Chartered Marketer program after completing an AI and Machine Learning certification program with MIT. I joined the DMSC because I wanted to continue to build on my educational efforts, further expand my network and become part of an incredible community of like-minded individuals. One thing I can attest to is that the resources for job seekers are amazing.

Adjustments

I learned about adjusting goals and accepting what was within and outside my control. When I started the program, I thought I’d have everything done early with time to spare. Once I realized all the work involved, I adjusted my timelines. Recognizing and adjusting a goal doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It just means you need a different approach to figure out how to reach your end goal.

Obstacles

The program isn’t easy, but for me, the main obstacle was the pace of completing courses and coursework, especially the final summit project. My solution was to treat this project the way I did my MBA. Once I understood the time commitment, I spoke to my family. I ensured that over the five weeks, I had people around to support me with my child, meals and psychologically when I felt stuck or challenged. Ensure you take advantage of the office hours; they make a huge difference.

Hopeful

I have gained the most value from the course instructors, network and job search support. I’ve always respected the profession, but now I have even more respect for anyone with their CM designation because I know what they had to go through to earn it. I’m hopeful that earning my CM designation will help set me apart from other job applicants and allow me to be gainfully employed within 3-6 months.
