A Better Marketer

In her CM Snapshot, Letty Wong chose the DMSC program to turn her struggles into strengths, prioritize progress over perfection and transform herself into a more capable, well-rounded marketing professional; in other words, she wanted to be a better marketer.

Master’s vs Designation

In early 2021, I researched CM holders, asked questions about the program, and gathered all the necessary documents. I wanted to upskill and join a community of Canadian marketers, and although I had previously considered a master’s degree, I decided to pursue my CM designation instead.

Pivot

I am grateful for the DMSC CM program because it helped me pivot and adopt a positive outlook on my career transition after being laid off. This program allowed me to meet peers in transition, provided access to additional training and events, and even paid for my last course to finish the designation.

Facing Fears

I found the Finance and Campaign Execution and the Summit courses quite challenging. They pushed me to face my fear and realize that math is just another language and data can tell a story. The rigorous coursework, feedback from instructors, and perseverance helped me overcome this obstacle.

Progress over Perfection

I learned to approach my goals by prioritizing incremental progress over perfection. I started the program with a year and a half of full-time marketing experience, while my peers had three or more years of experience. I was grateful to learn from them, but it was more challenging as I had less experience in the field. Despite this, I still enrolled and decided to learn as much as possible and focus on taking small steps.

The Chance to Grow

The most valuable part of the CM program is the work. I appreciate the case studies I explored, the assignments and projects I’ve completed, and the discussions I’ve had with my peers. I can use the templates from assignments in a future role, and the candid feedback from instructors will help me grow.

Changing Perceptions

I am proud to share that marketing also has a designation like the CPA, CFA, and PMP. The CM designation provides marketers with a professional standard to hold ourselves to. The compliance course was a great reminder of existing and new legislation to consider in our marketing and communications going forward.

A Better Marketer

The DMSC CM program will enhance my credentials, and the experience will shape me into a better marketer. Now, I can confidently look at balance sheets, build creative campaigns, display data visually in my storytelling, and think strategically when facing business challenges.
